Zambia's Green Future Begins Now!
Kiyona Energy, a subsidiary of ZESCO Limited, unveiled its innovative Green Cities Initiative yesterday with the installation of a 2MW cumulative Solar PV Plant with battery capacity on rooftops in Chongwe's Silverest area.
This event marked a groundbreaking step in Zambia's transition to renewable energy, embodying the President's vision of adding 1,000 MW of solar power to the national grid by 2025.
The Green Cities Initiative, supported by the Presidential Delivery Unit, addresses more than just electricity shortages—it transforms communities by promoting sustainable development and equitable energy access. By focusing on underserved regions, the initiative ensures that every Zambian can access reliable and clean power.
Through rooftop solar grid solutions, this project is redefining energy access for housing complexes, community markets, and rural towns. It offers a multitude of benefits, from powering homes and businesses to fostering job creation, improving skills, and unlocking new opportunities for Zambians. The impact is already visible: safer households, thriving markets, and better-resourced schools are leading the way toward a more sustainable future.
The recent launch event at the Silverest housing complex exemplified the power of this initiative. It demonstrated the success of collaboration and innovation, inspiring hope and resilience within the community. This moment is a vivid illustration of Zambia’s commitment to renewable energy, showcasing how solar power can revolutionize lives and propel the nation toward progress.
With projects like these, Zambia is forging a cleaner, greener future—one that prioritizes its people while empowering them to be part of the solution. Thanks to the Green Cities Initiative, homes, schools, clinics, and markets are embracing affordable, reliable electricity without dependency on the grid. The message is clear: Your home or business can now become a power plant!
